Muscle origin
Posterior aspect of xiphoid process, internal surfaces of lower costal cartilages and 7-12th rib, medial and lateral arcuate ligaments (lumbocostal arches) and bodies of L1-3 and intervertebral discs), and anterior longitudinal ligament

Muscle insertion
Central tendon of diaphragm

Muscle function
Primary muscle of breathing. “Bracing”. Depresses costal cartilages and control of 7-12 rib.

Nerve innervation
C3-5 (Lovett reactor L1-3)
